Participate in a Training Tutor Training Workshops are provided in Laubach Method for tutoring English to adult English Learners. Training lasts 10-12 hours and is provided over two Saturdays. The training will explain what's involved to be a tutor, provide practical guidelines for working with the English learner, and acquaint you with the scope of the materlals and support provided by Laubach Literacy of Ventura County. Trainers are certified by ProLiteracy America Training is free Materials are free Completion of the training is not accredited by any state agency and does not contribute to any state requirements for any certification.

Job Description:
Laubach Literacy English as a Second Language Tutor
Purpose To tutor adult English learners 18 years or older learn to speak, understand, read and write the English language to meet their self-identified goals, and to understand U.S. culture.
Responsibilities Encourage and support the adult English learners by
Helping them develop confidence and a positive attitude about learning
Respecting them and involving them in decisions about the learning process
Selecting adult materials and approaches that are suitable for the learners' ability and needs
Supporting them and praising them for their efforts
Guiding them in adopting behavior appropriate to this culture
Meeting regularly and punctually
Be well prepared and design lessons based on the needs and interests of the learners. Review with the learners any work they have done independently. Keep records of each learner's progress. Report adult learner progress to the Local Area Coordinator. Report hours spent tutoring, preparing materials, meetings, etc. to the Director who maintains the record of hours.
Place of Work One-to-one tutoring or small group in a library, church, work site, or other acceptable place
Hours Meetings with learners 1-2 times per week for a total of 2-3 hours per week One to two hours per week preparing lessons
Length of Commitment A minimum of six months
Required Training A 10-12 hour Tutor Training Workshop in English as a Second Language
2 Saturday sessions of 5-6 hours each
Volunteer Qualifications Be dependable and prompt. Be able to relate well to a variety of people. Be willing to maintain the confidentiality of the lessons. Have good listening, speaking, reading and writing skills
Be flexible. Be friendly. Be patient. Be optimistic. Have a good sense of humor.
