  About LLVC

This year Laubach Literacy of Ventura County celebrates 40 years of training compassionate and generous volunteers who have empowered thousands of foreign born adult county residents to overcome a serious handicap, the limited ability to communicate in the English language.
Effective language skills are the core of literacy; fundamental and critical to community participation and to further progress in education or economic success.
Laubach Literacy of Ventura County, Inc.(LLVC) is an all volunteer, non-profit organization that provides free, student centered tutoring in English as a Second Language to adults who seek to improve their speaking, comprehension, reading, and writing of English in order to participate more successfully in society and an understand U.S. culture.
Tens of thousands foreign born residents of Ventura County struggle with limited skills to speak, understand, read, and write English constraining their ability to participate in the community, practice a profession effectively, seek medical attention when needed, interact with police, courts, social and safety services, obtain insurance and/or drivers licenses, qualify for better paid jobs, attend school/college, assist their children with school work or activities.
Laubach students have succeeded in:

  • Obtaining California Drivers Licenses and automobile insurance.
  • Obtaining new/better jobs and promotions
  • Obtaining U.S. Citizenship, Registering and voting for the first time.
  • Participating more in children’s school activities/homework
  • Enrolling in Adult Education Programs and Community College courses

The work of the tutors is unique and valuable because it provides tutoring at a time and place most suitable for the adult student and tutor. These students may not be able to attend scheduled classroom-based instruction due to work or family demands, or may not have enough formal education to adapt to the U.S. classroom protocols.
Tutors are also valuable resources when students encounter baffling situations in their daily lives. Not only does the student benefit from the tutoring, but they themselves frequently become a resource for family members and associates.
Volunteers receive free training, materials, and support in order to tutor adult residents who have many cultural backgrounds and language skill levels. We always have many students waiting for a tutor to become available. We match trained volunteers with adult learners so they can form long-term bonds and work together to continue building the students’ language skills.
Compassionate volunteers are needed who can give a few hours a week to another human being who is struggling with a limited ability to speak or understand English because it is their second language.  Visit our website at www.laubachventura.org, contact us at info@laubachventura.org or call 805-385-9584 for further details.

Program Directors: We are available to make a short presentation about our organization to any interested group.  We can also present a brief video, which is also available on our website for viewing.

LLVC Began as an informal group of volunteers in 1970.  It was formalized as a 501 (c) (3) non-profit educational corporation in 1987.
